Wike And His NEW Rivers Vision

There is no gainsaying
that Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike is passionate about the development of Rivers State.
In the last one year of his administration, he has laid out his vision to get Rivers State working and moving in a new direction.
The major plank of Governor Wike’s administration is accountability. In a manner reminiscent of the village assembly in the very republican traditional setting, he is operating an open feedback system that is redefining accountability and taking democracy to the next level.
Early in his administration, Wike, in line with his policy of running an open government, established direct communication links with the electorate. This enables him to interact directly with members of the public, get unedited feedback and gauge the real impact of his government’s programmes, project and policies.
The last one year of Wike’s administration has been a challenging one; a year in which the administration has demonstrated a clear will to tackle challenges and to change the circumstances facing the people of Rivers State.
The governor has run a government of unity where no one is sidelined or marginalised, a government that is more efficient, more effective and more accountable to the public.
Wike’s government started off with planning. This is obvious in the number and quality of projects his government has embarked upon in the last one year.
Wike started with the mission of restoring the garden city status of Port Harcourt. For some years now, the beauty of the city has faded out and her status degraded leaving a picture of an unorganised city in the minds of residents and visitors. Today, Port Harcourt is gradually reclaiming its garden city status with a network of good roads and streets lights.
Again, when this administration came on board, it met a state that was very close to anarchy. Within one year, the administration has restored the confidence of the people in the ability of government to protect them and their property. The government has also restored the confidence of investors in the state economy, while also ensuring the rule of law.
From the very first day in office, the governor swung into action toward actualising his goals. At the inauguration ground, Governor Wike proceeded to the UTC Junction, Port Harcourt to flag-off the road rehabilitation programme tagged “Operation zero pothole”. Today, residents of Diobu, Port Harcourt Township, new GRA and several other parts of the Port Harcourt city are now driving on smooth roads.
He also, at the inauguration ground, restored sanity to the long collapsed state’s judicial system by appointing Honourable Justice Daisy Okocha as the Acting Chief Judge of the state and High Court Justice Christy Nwankwo Toby as the Acting President of the Rivers State Customary Court Appeal. All the courts, hitherto shut down by the previous administration were re-opened. He also immediately ordered the reinstatement of lecturers of State University of Science and Technology (RUST) who were unjustly sacked and denied salaries for their involvement in legitimate union agitations.
Governor Wike appreciated the saying that a labourer deserves his wages and that those who had served the state from their prime youth till old age must not be left to suffer. In his characteristic compassion, he had to find money, even in the face of a brazenly depleted treasury, to clear the backlog of salaries and wages owed all categories of the state workforce, including retirees.
In a bid to restore Port Harcourt to its erstwhile Garden City status, Wike appointed a Sole Administrator for the Rivers State Waste Management Authority (RIWAMA), and immediately paid the four months arrears owed refuse contractors by the previous government. Today, the mountains of waste dumped in various parts of the Port Harcourt City have all disappeared and the city is gradually wearing a new, befitting look.
Most noteworthy is the litany of infrastructural projects that have virtually turned the state into a huge construction site. Within 100 days, the administration ensured the completion of three roads measuring approximately 143 kms. Thereafter, Wike flagged-off the construction of new roads, mobilised a coalition of strategic partners to repair the Eleme junction – Onne section of the East-West Road, and substantially mobilised contractors to continue with the construction work on major roads that were abandoned by the previous government.
Governor Wike’s positive and pragmatic interventions and accomplishments within the last one year seem endless. From road infrastructure to security, education, healthcare, environmental protection and sports development, the governor has matched his words with actions.
Indeed, for many people, Governor Wike’s glowing achievements in his first one year in office far exceeded their expectations.
From all indications, given the modest achievement of Governor Wike in the last one year, I foresee a situation where there would be massive economic growth in the state very soon. This is because the right infrastructure is in place to drive that economic growth. Kudos, Governor Wike. More grease to your elbow.
