NGO Sets Up Committee For Community Development
Niger Delta Professionals for Development, NIFPRODEV, a non governmental organisation based in Warri, Delta State has inaugurated a seven-man committee that would serve as liason officers for five communities in Bayelsa State that were designated as flash point for its economic development programmes.
The programme, tagged Enhance Livelihood and Governance, is to assist over 1,500 people drawn from five commaunities of Okolobiri, Ayama, Zarama, Akabiri and Okutukutu, all in Yenagoa Local Government Area.
Speaking at the occasion, the Executive Director of the organisation, Mr Joel Bisina said 2,500 people would benefit from the state axis, saying that activities of the body include strengthening community livelihoods sources and improving oil revenue transperancy.
Bisina said the organisation, which in the past 11 years had been working to sustain peace in the Niger Delta, disclosed that it is in partnership with the Oxfam Novib of Netherland.
Among other activities of the organisation, the body also provides technical support to oil companies operating in the Niger Delta as regards implementation of Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with communities, conflict resolution as well as provide self-help services.
The Director said participants would be trained and assisted to run their businesses after identifying projects which are achievable and sustainable to their livelihood.
He, therefore, charged the committee to live up to expectations, saying that their task “is enormous, but surmountable.
Responding on behalf of others, the chairman of the committee, Mr. Tari Dadiowei, assured that his committee will try to achieve the objectives of the organisation, but warned that crises communities would not be considered for project implementations.
Chief Stanley Otazi, the traditional ruler of Okutukutu, thanked the people for initiating the programmes which, he said, would help to check the level of poverty among the rural areas to be impacted by the programmes.
