As Nigeria Decides…
The most important
thing we need as a nation to move forward and attain a greater height is peace.
Peace exists when individuals or communities, states or countries are able to resolve their conflicts without violence and work together to improve the quality of lives.
It is quite unfortunate and sad that Nigeria, our country, is not experiencing peace in any way, violence has become the order of the day. If it is not the issue of Boko Haram, it will be that of kidnapping, killing and bombing of innocent souls. As a result of this, everyone in this country is living in fear.
In our country today, people are afraid of attending social functions and gatherings, while some do not even attend.
For instance, there are speculations about tomorrow’s election. Election has not been conducted but people are already entertaining fear because of the time and season that we are in. Election has become a threat to every Nigerian to the extent that some citizens have send their families outside the country for safety.
Many Nigerians are afraid of losing their lives and loved ones to election, and so they have decided not to even go out and cast their votes. It ought not to be so. Nigerians, it is high time we wake up from our slumber and build this nation by maintaining peace and order.
Nigerians, let’s say no to violence and embrace peace.
We should avoid violence in tomorrow’s and subsequent elections and face the reality of life by casting or votes wisely and sensibly. We should not vote because others are voting. Nigerians by now should know who to vote and why the person has to be voted for.
It is our right to vote the candidates of our choice, but we should not forget that whoever we voted into power lies the future of Nigeria. And so there is need for every Nigerian to vote responsibly, peacefully and not violently.
Another issue we need to address as a country is that of tribalism. It is one of the greatest problems confronting this nation, which if it is not properly addressed, would demean the country, because most of the problems we are experiencing and having today are caused by the youths who are unemployed.
In his The Trouble With Nigeria, Chinua Achebe had said that “There is nothing wrong with the Nigerian land or climate or water or air or anything else. The Nigerian problem is the unwillingness or inability of its leaders to rise to the responsibility, to the challenge of personal example which are the hallmarks of true leadership”.
Another opportunity has come for Nigerians to exercise their rights. The question is who are we voting for? Are we voting for Mr. A because he is our brother or because he is of the same tribe with us? Or are we voting because we know that he is the right candidate who is capable and qualified to rule this great nation?
Truth be told, Nigeria cannot achieve her goals, aims, objective and height if we continue this way.
Peace can only last where human rights are respected, the masses well fed, and individuals and nations are free from fear of violence. For instance, a person growing or surviving in a conflict zone may desire shelter and protection from violence. Many people have lost their loved ones, parents, and brothers to violence. And so every Nigerian should be given a sense of belonging and opportunity to exercise his/her right as a citizen of this nation.
All Nigerians should be given the liberty to participate in shaping political decisions because transforming and changing the country cannot single handedly be done by one person. It is the collective effort of everyone. Therefore, we should not forget that irrespective of our states, tribes that we are one.
