LG Donates 50 Canoes To Flood Ravaged Communities
The Silame Local Government in Sokoto State has donated 50 canoes worth over N3 million to some flood ravaged communities in the area.
Chairman , Alhaji Mani Katami said in Silame on Thursday that communities in nine out of the 10 wards in the area benefited from the gesture .
He listed Silame , Gande , Gabbuwa , Jekanadu , Kandawa , Gitta-ran , Tozo , Dankala and Tungar-Dabo as benefitting communities.
According to him , the gesture is aimed at assisting the communities to transport their farm produce to the markets and for other socio- economic activities.
‘’ These communities were completely cut off from the rest of the local government after the devastating flood about three weeks ago, the flood also destroyed assorted farm products worth over N1 billion as well as scores of houses .
‘’ Transportation is very important in the facilitation of various socio- economic activities and the residents of these communities are now mobile ,’’ Katami said .
He said that a comprehensive list of the victims had been compiled and submitted to the state government, adding that they are hopeful that the government would soon come to the assistance of the victims.
‘’ We also bought assorted drugs worth about N1.5 million to contain the outbreak of gastroenteritis in Jekanadu , Kubodun-Kasa and Fakkara villages as a result of the flood disaster, although there was no loss of life ,’’ Katami said .
Meanwhile , the state government has donated six tricycles , hearing aids, walking sticks and braille machines to some physically challenged persons in the local government .
Speaking while distributing the items in Silame , Katami commended the state government for ensuring the welfare and comfort of the physically challenged persons .
‘’ The state government has been paying N6,500 as a monthly allowance to each of the physically challenged persons in the 23 local governments in the state, this is commendable ,’’ the chairman said.
