Consumers Decry High Cost Of Commodities In PH
Consumers in Port
Harcourt and its environ have decried the increasing cost of consumable commodities in the market for some time now.
They have opined that prices of consumable commodities are continuously going higher every day, where as their disposable income have continued to diminish in contrast to living standard now.
Some of the consumers who interacted with The Tide on the trend have posited that commodities like Garri which is one of the staple and most favoured food stuffs is going beyond the reach of most families.
Mrs Mercy Ogbondah, a household operator in one of the communities in Akpor Kingdom while interacting with The Tide said that the rate at which consumer commodities have gone up in the market is a surprise to her.
According to her, she finds it difficult this time around to cope with the daily feeding of her family, pointing out that a basin of garri she used to buy for between N1,800 and N2,500 has now gone up to N3,000.
Apart from that, she said that the Custard container of beans that came down to N800, has now gone up to between N850 and N900, while the same quantity of rice has since the first quarter of this year gone up from N600 to N800.
On her part, Rose Okwu, a resident of mile three Diobu in Port Harcourt, and a civil servant has lamented over how she had continued to spend more money on consumption this time around.
According to her, the Prices of Commodities keep adding every now and then, but no clear reason has been given.
She said “One of the things that keep worrying me now is that the Price of Kerosine has increased in such a way that we now buy one litre for N140, but there is no scarcity, and no reason for such price hike.
Rose, therefore, urged the state government, particularly the ministry of commerce to wade into the matter, and if possible establish a permanent discount market and also monitor its operations to help the masses.
However, when The Tide visited the market to ascertain the level of cost, it was discovered that a basin of garri (Ikwerre garri) sells higher than others at the cost of between N2,800 and N3,300 while others (Enugu, Bendel) Sell between N2000 and N2,500.
Already, the custard rubber of beans has moved from N800 to N850,while rice has remained the same as at last week.
