Senate Committee Urges Strict Monitoring Of N’Delta Waterways
The Senate Committee on Navy says it would prevail on security agencies in the country to ensure strict monitoring of the waterways in the Niger Delta so as to check cases of piracy and kidnapping.
Chairman of the committee, Senator George Thompson Sekibo, who stated this during a chat with newsmen in Port Harcourt, said regular and frequent patrol of water ways, particularly the Bonny waterways would mitigate the menace.
Sekibo, who represents the Rivers-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, assured that the federal legislature is committed to making laws that would protect the lives and properties of Nigerians.
“The function of law makers primarily is to make laws for the good governance, peace and order of the country, and these are made through bills and motions.
“You will recall just last week, there was a motion over Port Harcourt-Bonny water ways where they kidnapped some persons and all that. So ours is to bring it to the attention of the executive to take action, and I believe that the Navy formation and indeed the Armed Forces formation are working hard on our water ways,” he said.
Senator Sekibo further said the synergy between the Navy and other security agencies has helped in reducing crime in the Niger Delta region.
”You will recall the issue of piracy and kidnapping was much more before than now and I believe that with the new Senate being inaugurated now, we are going to work hard and suggest maybe better ways for them to handle the problem.
”The problem sometimes is that when we are privy to information we have to pass it on to the security agencies so that they will be able to curb the excesses,” he said.
