Coach Appeals For Sponsorship Of Female Football
The head coach of Rivers Angels Football Club of Port Harcourt, Edwin Okon has appealed to multi-nationals, corporate bodies and well meaning individuals to promote and develop female football in Nigeria.
He stated that female Football is not growing in the country as it was left for government alone to handle, adding that if there were sponsors the development of the game would have been rapid like the male.
Okon made the appeal in an exclusive interview with Tidesports source, at the weekend after a training session at Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt.
He noted that concentration is more on the male football, saying that there would be lots of benefits if female football is being sponsored, as it would create employment opportunities for many young girls.
According to him, it is difficult to discover female footballers because there are less football academics for females in the country, adding that most times female players were normally discovered from school’ inter-house sports festival and inter-school football competition.
“ You hardly see school sports festival and inter sports school competition in recent times,” Okon said
The number one female coach in the state explained that it is only few states including Rivers State that have female feeder team in the country.
He used the forum to commend the State governor Chief Nyesom Wike for his support to the Female Football Club in the state.
“All the female football club in the country supposed to have academy. Every thing should not beleft in the hands of government alone,”he explained.
Okon also stated that it is important to groom the young ones in their early age for them to do well in the game.
