Encourage Your Girl Child To Study Sciences – Banigo
The Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has advised parents to encourage and support their female children to develop interest in the sciences.
The deputy governor gave this advice while speaking at the closing ceremony of a Special Summer Camp organised by the Association of Professional Women Engineers in Nigeria (APWEN) tagged “Engineering Could Be Fun For Girls”, at the ICT Centre of the Rivers State University of Port Harcourt.
Represented by her Special Assistant on Social Media, Miss Uki Asemota, Banigo said she believed the girl-child, when given the necessary support and encouragement, could develop her full potentials in the sciences and compete favourably amongst her male peers.
The deputy governor, who said she was passionate about the girl-child, disclosed that she had set up an intitiatvie: “Protect the Girl Child Campaign” as part of efforts to encourage the girl-child.
She commended the State Chief Executive, Chief Nyesom Wike for being passionate about the course of women and gender sensitive in his appointment into positions of trust, stressing that over 30 per cent of his appointees are women.
Banigo, who encouraged parents not to be wary of taking care of their family, said family was the bedrock of the nation.
Also speaking, Prof Ayo Tamuno of the Faculty of Engineering, Rivers State University, said the camp has given female students a sense of awareness on the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
He said that science was not just meant for boys, adding that the girl-child can also rise to the top in engineering and mathematics.
Earlier, the chairperson of the Association of Professional Women Engineers in Nigeria (APWEN), Port Harcourt, said APWEN’s vision was to be a catalyst for advancement of women in the engineering profession towards national and global technological development.
According to her, the association also tries to increase awareness that engineering was also a career for girls with the aim of increasing the numerical strength of female development.
