Expert Stresses Need For Road Safety
The need for all motor
ists to imbibe the spirit of safety on the road has again been emphasized .
A safety expert, Engr Goodluck Nnamdi who made this assertion on the side-line of a public safety programme organised by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Sustainable Safety and Human Right Partners in Port Harcourt on Monday said there is need for all drivers to drive and stay alive as well as adapt the right attitude while on the road.
Nnamdi noted that the nation could develop if there is an atmosphere devoid of injuries, deaths and insecurity posed by the ever increasing rates of road crashes.
He said Nigerians and indeed the motoring public should ensure zero road crashes to avoid death and injuries, pointing out that measures should be taken to curb the menace on the road.
According to him, “let every motorist remember their loved ones home while driving and punder over the negative implications of their sudden death or being in the hospital due to injuries sustained on the road”, and enjoined all to kill the speed before the speed kills them so that they could enjoy their lives.
The expert, however, advised that motorists should ensure that their vehicles are in good condition and road worthy, they obey road traffic rules and regulations, be safety conscious and careful always on the road as well as avoid unnecessary speeding and over-taking without proper visibility.
He said they should use their common senses, interpret and understand road signs that are important to road safety, stop using cell phones while behind the wheel; avoid drunk driving and rest properly before and after embarking on journeys.
Nnamdi also called on all relevant authorities to arrest and prosecute any offender in order to serve as deterrant to others.
