RSG Renames Bori Polytechnic After Saro-Wiwa
The Rivers State Gov
ernment has renamed the state-owned Bori Polytechnic to the late environmental activist, “Kenule Beeson Sarowiwa Polytechnic” in contribution of his contributions to the state and the Niger Delta region.
While declaring the change in his name recently, the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, noted that heroes like Sarowiwa who fought selflessly for the betterment of society and humanity should not be forgotten, but celebrated beyond the state and Nigeria.
The Governor used the occasion to highlight the achievements of late Saro-Wiwa, especially as a former sole administrator of Bonny and the first Commissioner for Education in Rivers State. He was a known and respected environmental activist whose efforts exposed the marginalisation of the Niger Delta and attracted international attention to the region”, he said.
It will be recalled that the late Kenule Beeson Sarowiwa, popularly called Ken Sarowiwa, was killed via hanging by the federal government under the leadership of the late General Sani Abacha in circumstances surrounding Sarowiwa’s fight for the emancipation for the Niger Delta Region.
Meanwhile, the Bill to effect the change of name has already been forwarded to the Rivers State House of Assembly.
