Time To Embrace Change
One is compelled to send a solemn appeal to all Nigeri
ans who are still with good conscience, respect and honuor to our dear country; and are irrevocably committed to better the lots of the diverse people of Nigeria to set sentiments aside and embrace meaningful change in the nation’s political landscape.
Nigeria as a nation cannot make any well-meaning progress and/or have concrete development that will sustainably affect the ordinary lives of the citizens wherever they live; except Nigerians, resolve to have men and women of character, integrity, discipline and the fear of God in key leadership positions at all levels of our polity. Indeed, Nigeria is in search of a viable leadership and that is what the 2015 elections are out to underscore for the Nigerian people.
In 1978/79, it could be recalled graphically that the political activities of the main political parties, namely; NPN, NPP, UPN, GNPP, and PRP were conducted with great commitments, objectivity, respect to views of opposing parties and general decorum as exemplified by the key players at that time. There was also logical and analytical presentation of alternative views to the electorate without the political excesses in violence, killings, destruction of property, and character assassination as we are witnessing today.
The same pattern or scenarios were re-enacted in the 1990’s as the National Republican Convention {NRC} and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) were decreed into existence by the military junta. In that two party system in 1993, a Muslim =Muslirn ticket was sponsored by the SDP with Alhaji MKO Abiola of blessed memory and Alhaji Baba Gana Kingibe as President and Vice President respectively and the SDP received the overwhelming votes and approval of all Nigerians in an election that was internationally acclaimed as free, fair, peaceful and credible. That was a fit achieved by Nigerians without respect to greed, tribe or other primordial considerations.
In those instances, the quality of debates and conducts of political campaigns/rallies were amazingly enriching in raising the overall consciousness of the average, citizens toward an enduring legacy of; a united, strong and self-reliant Nigeria; a great and dynamic economy; a just and egalitarian society; a land of bright and full opportunity for all citizens; and a free and dynamic society.
Today, Nigerian politics and some politicians are acting in the reverse as they abuse their positions and cause unpardonable pain and horror to the people. It is really sad to note that Nigerians are, becoming increasingly more divided, unfocused, despaired and confused than ever before in our nation’s history.
On a daily basis, Nigerians are progressingly more anxious to flee their own communities and country at the slightest opportunity due to the failed expectations foisted on the citizens by insincere political leadership. Kidnapping, killing, hatred, wickedness, political thuggery and assassination, robbery and general fear and despondency are the rule rather than the exception.
Besides, the handiwork of some elites do well to heighten tension in the land. These elites hide under the cover of selfish political ambitions, massive corruption, religious extremism, terrorism and general insecurity; including alarming youth unemployment, lack of integrity and transparency in the conduct of public affairs and pretend to see nothing amiss even as the nation’s economy bleeds profusely.
The dwindling and ailing state of the economy presided over by a cartel (cabal) is rated as efficient, effective and productive. in their own estimation. What do we have as a people in such a situation? We have a multiplicity of woes confronting Nigeria and the situation is degenerating. It will be an error for the electorate to have respect and affection for any government which has been progressively moving from wrong to wrong in order to defend its immorality, inability to deliver, and monumental corruption in handling public affairs.
Let me state the obvious. No country or nation in the world thrives in an atmosphere of indiscipline, massive corruption and ineffective leadership in the management of public affairs.
Nigerians admire and would like to be citizens of countries such as – USA, Japan, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, etc. because these countries have attained extra ordinary progress, development and excellence in all fields of human endeavours. This is as a result of their training ‘\ and discipline backed by integrity and transparency at all levels of their society. Nigerians must be willing to embrace enlightened political culture and acceptance of alternating political parties in government and governance, as it is in America, Britain, Germany, France at regular intervals via the electoral process.
It is wrong and primitive for a party to retain dubious control of power without keen and vibrant competition among the political actors in a polity. Nigeria does not operate a monarchy or paramount rulership system as we witness in some local communities. Nigeria needs at this point in time a leader, who is forthright, focused, and determined to lead by example through a culture and nurture of discipline, hardwork, reward for hardwork, integrity and the fear of God.
The great task of governance and ensuring meaningful transformational change requires a disciplined and tested leadership with actual zero – tolerance for corruption. That is the only way to rescue Nigeria from the current drift and stagnation. The issue of governance is a serious – minded business and is not about brother, sister, friend or my man, as the case may be. Now, the bottom line is that Nigerians need one who has the ability and capability to deliver on electoral promises and make the average Nigerians proud in any part of the world. Nigerians need a strong character that can redirect our focus toward national revival. Presently, Nigeria as a nation has become a laughing stock among the comity of nations- especially among the oil rich nations, as Nigerja imports petroleum products without adequately functioning refineries; electricity supply is epileptic and non – existent and would only be steady come 2017 we are told. The ailing educational and health sectors coupled with a polluted/ degraded environment of Ogoniland and the Niger Delta as a whole add to the nation’s malaise. Strange and numerous diseases and untimely deaths ravage the Ogoni and Niger Delta people due to unprecedented oil pollution and environmental degradation; and no conscientious effort has been taken to remedy the situation in line with the UNEP REPORT ON OGONI LAND.
Indeed, Nigeria needs healing and rescue from decaying ethics and moral values in governance. I am deeply aware that Nigeria as a nation has great and enormous potentials and resources. There is therefore an urgent need for all men and women of probility to embrace change for proper harnessing of our huge potentials and resources to the glory of God and for the benefits of all Nigerians l irrespective of creed, tribe or other nebulous considerations. Finally, make a wise choice to effect the needed change that, will heal and rescue Nigerians from the current pains in the land.
