EU To Provide N203m For Enugu Water Projects
The European Commission is to provide more than N203 million to the Enugu State Government for the execution of rural water projects in the state.
The state commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke, who disclosed this while briefing newsmen at the end of the state executive council meeting said that the commission would provide the funds under its water aid facility programme.
Mr. Ugwoke stated that already the state executive council has approved the payment of the sum of N25 million as its counterpart contribution for the execution of the project in three local government areas in the state.
According to him, the benefiting council areas and communities are Idoha and Uwelu in Igbo Etiti, Nomeh and Okeani/Aniyi in Nkanu East, Imilike Enu and Iheakpu Obollo Afor in Udenu local government areas.
He also told journalists that the three council areas would contribute a total of N50 million for the execution of programme in their respective areas.
The commissioner further disclosed that the Executive Council also constituted a nine-member executive council committee for the effective implementation of the urban water sector reform programme in the state.
Mr. Ugwoke explained that the committee headed by the secretary to the state government, Mr. Martin Ilo, would ensure that the World Bank sponsored water project was executed to improve urban water service delivery in Enugu and Nsukka urban areas of the state.
The executive council meeting chaired by the state governor, Mr. Sullivan Chime, he said, also announced some of the programmes lined up for the celebration of the centenary anniversary of Enugu , the Coal City .
The programme as approved by the council will on the 12th of December 2009 feature Mmawu Festival, while on the 17th of December 2009 there will be the launching of the centenary commemorative stamps.
An inter-denominational church service will be held on the 18th of December followed on the 19th by Christmas Carol, soap opera concert and drama on the 1949 coal miners massacre, among other events.

Haniel Jack Foundation Awards Five Rivers Indigenes Scholarship
The Ibanibo Haniel Jack Foundation has awarded scholarships to five Rivers State indigenes in different tertiary institutions.
The scholarship programme was announced on Easter Sunday by Rev. Dr. Samuel Wachukwu, who is also the presiding pastor of Redeemer Baptist Church, at No. 44/46 Lumumba Street, Mile Two Diobu, in Port Harcourt.
Speaking, the chairman of the occasion, Barrister Karibi George, advised the recipients to justify the scholarship by ensuring that they put in their best and finish at the expected time.
George reminded them that opportunity comes but once and they should take advantage of the opportunity that comes their way judiciously.
“Those of you who are beneficiaries of this scholarship should also remember to help others and the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
“I advise you to justify the opportunity given to you and make the man who gave you the scholarship, yourself, and your family proud,” Barrister George said.

He explained that the scholarship spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels in various high institutions in Nigeria. He thanks Sir Jack for the gesture.
The scholarship is to promote education in our society, most especially for Rivers indigenes, and equally assist those who cannot immediately afford tuition fees.

Ibanibo Haniel Jack, who is also the chief executive officer (CEO) of White House Hotel, in Port Harcourt.
Chief Prezi Diffa, while presenting the awards, commended Sir Ibanibo Haniel Jack, who has deemed it necessary to give back to society.
Chief Diffa equally advised the beneficiaries to take their academics seriously and count themselves lucky.
“The man who has given you this scholarship wants to better your lives, so please put in every effort to ensure you finish the school with flying colors,” Chief Diffa said.
The beneficiaries are Isoboye Haniel Douglas, Naomi Douglas, Charles Batubo, Ajé Sokari, and
