ASUU Strike: Former VC Commends Wike
Former Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Prof Ozo-Merkuri Ndimele, has commended the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, for rescuing the institution from the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Ndimele gave the commendation during a symposium in honour of an outstanding scholar in the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Kontien Trinya, at the school campus, recently.
He also urged the management and students of the institution to be appreciative of Governor Wike’s rescue mission.
Noting that the over five-month old strike has caused remarkable setback to the nation’s education system, Ndimele recalled how other institutions were badly affected by ASUU strike.
“We thank Governor Nyesom Wike for what we are enjoying in the State, because we are not on strike”, he said.
According to him, Governor Wike was foresighted in his determination to make the State-owned higher institutions independent of ASUU.
He, however, advised the students to ensure prompt payment of all their required fees to enable the institution serve them better.
Earlier in his address, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Okey Onuchuku, described the event as a great deal in the annals of the school.
He noted that it was important to celebrate people while they are alive rather than when they are no more.
The Professor of Economics spoke on the need to take mentoring as a serious business.
“We must take mentoring seriously. We must develop people to enable them mentor others. That is why we are here today”, he said.
Meanwhile, Prof. Trinya, whose birthday coincided with the event, thanked the Vice Chancellor and the entire institution for honouring him.
