Good Governance Advocate Tasks LGs On Dev
A good governance advocate and public affairs commentator, Livingstone Wechie, has challenged local government chairmen to ensure they impact positively on the people at the grassroots.
Speaking during a phone-in radio programme organised by Silverbird Communications at the weekend in Port Harcourt, Wechie observed that many local government areas were still backward due to poor governance and vision by the chairmen.
Wechie, who spoke against the backdrop of the one year anniversary of the local government chairmen in the state, said much still needs to be done at the grassroots.
He stated that though most of the chairmen have fared well, some still do not have anything to show after one year in office.
Wechie pointed out that many local government areas have abundant natural resources that need to be tapped for the good of the rural people, arguing that rather than exploiting such for development purposes, many chairmen wait for monthly allocations to service their obligations, including capital projects and recurrent expenditures.
This situation, he submitted, has made the grassroots less developed and resourceful.
To reverse this situation, he urged the Rivers State Government to evolve a template for the chairmen, as he commended the governor for showing exemplary leadership in terms of projects’ delivery and infrastructure development.
The public commentator tasked the chairmen to emulate the governor, so as to deliver the dividends of good governance to their people.
