NIOB Seeks Solutions To End Building Collapse
As part of its awareness and advocacy programme to curb the manace of building collapse, the Nigeria Institute of Building (NIOB), Rivers State Chapter is set to commence today 2022 Builder Week to seek ways to educate the public on building construction.
The Public Relations Officer of NIOB Rivers State Chapter, Builder Hillary Osemedua Ukwadi who revealed this on Wednesday, said this year builders Week tagged “Building with Integrity” will discuss the processes of building designs and building construction.
Ukwadi also revealed that the conference will also look at issues concerning the processes of post building construction as maintenance, ethical engagements of registered experience and specialised professionals and over all performance of the building in use.
According to him,” the essence is to end building callapse in the country which has caused collosal economic loss and lives of many”.
He said the recent collapse of buildings in Lagos and the seven storey building at GRA, Port Harcourt were regrettable, but something must be done to end it.
“The conference is also to further educate the public to be aware of the need to engage professionals in building construction”, he said.
The Tide learnt that the National Building Code ( NBC) empowers the builders to the management and the execution of building works including the supervising of artisans and tradesmen shall be carried out by a registered builder.
Ukwadi however said clients have more advantage when registered builders are engaged which is holding the builder accountable in case of professional negligence by reporting to the professional association at the NIOB and the regulatory body Council for Registered Builders of Nigeria ( CORBEN).
