TUC Tasks Affiliate Unions On Members’ Welfare
Rivers State Council of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has tasked all its affiliated unions to work towards the promotion of the interest of their members.
State Chairman of the congress, Comrade Austin Jonah said this during the election of executives of the General Goods Transport Association of Nigeria (GGTAN), an affiliate of the congress in Port Harcourt.
Jonah who was represented by the Public Relations Officer of the union, Mr Nyeche Wodike said members’ interest must remain paramount in the scheme of things.
He charged the association to ensure that those who would pilot affairs of the union should be people of proven record of service to the society, adding that the association cannot afford to elect dubious people into its executive.
Jonah also commended them for their peaceful conduct and urged for it to be sustained.
Also speaking the outgone caretaker committee, chairman of the association, Comrade Cyril Amobi Njoku, said the election was long overdue as the association had remained without valid elected executives for a long time.
Njoku also charged the new executives to ensure that members feel its impact.
Later in an interview, newly elected national president of the association, Igwebuike Okoye said his executive would prioritise the welfare of members.
Okoye said the association was going into oblivion and therefore needed to be revived.
He said the association would work with the managements of the various parties with a view to creating jobs for members. Those elected included: Comrade Igwebuike Okoye National president, Alhaji Ibrahim Kwajaffoh vice president, while Ndoh Ihiabe was elected Treasurer..
