Aleto Eleme Bridge Collapses
Barely two days after Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF) staged a warning protest on the Aleto bridge, Ogoni section of the East-West Road and gave the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to mobilise contractors handling the road to site to reconstruct the entire stretch of the road or face mother of all protests, a section of the bridge has collapsed.
The President-General of OYF, Comrade Legborsi Yamaabana who visited the collapsed bridge said the Ogoni axis of the East- West road where the bridge is located is a major route to the economic hub of the nation, but regretted that the road has remained in a deplorable state and has only become a death trap that has terminated the lives of innocent Ogonis and other commuters.
Yamaabana used the opportunity to reiterate the subsisting 14-day ultimatum that the Ogoni youths gave to the Federal Government to mobilise contractors to the road to completely reconstruct it. He noted that if the government fails to heed the call after the 14 days, Ogoni Youth Federation would be left with no option but to mobilise Ogoni people and friends of Ogoni across the Niger Delta and embark on mother of all protests, such that all economic activities in the area will be shut down.
He pointed out that the neglect of the road was a metaphor of the total denigration of the Ogoni populace in terms of employment, security and provision of functional infrastructures in the area, despite their contributions to the economic development of the nation.
