Leah Sharibu, Girl Of Faith
February 19 this year will be one year since Leah was abducted by Boko Haram and kept in their enclave. She was the only Christian among the abducted 110 students of the Government Girls Science and Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi, Yobe State. 109 of the students were Muslim girls. Leah and her school mates were kidnapped by Boko Haram in their school on February 19, 2018 at about 5:30pm.
However, a month after, on March 21, 2018, to be precise, 104 of the school girls were released and returned to the State in a carnival like form. Five of the students died in captivity. They were brought back in nine buses with people lined up in the street hailing and thanking the Boko Haram for returning the innocent school girls. Security agencies steered clear from the scene perhaps to ensure safe return of the girls. The whole scenario looked dramatic, scripted and collaborative.
Mrs. Rebecca Sharibu, Leah’s mother, pressed through the released girls to search for Leah, her beloved daughter, but could not find her. Instead she received a message from Leah through the released school mates to her parents and Christians in Nigeria urging them to pray “for the will of God to be done in her life”. Not her will, and that of her parents, but that of God. Wao! what a wonderful teenager of faith?
On why she was excepted from the released girls, they said Boko Haram insisted that Leah should renounce her Christian faith and convert to Islam, but she bluntly refused. She told Boko Haram that she would not convert to Islam. It was as a result of that, she was withdrawn and sent back into captivity. Boko Haram told her that any day she renounced her Christianity and embraced Islam, she would be released.
Mrs. Sharibu fell down and fainted. One wondered how she felt seeing her school mates leaving her behind in the hands of terrorists. Some of the released girls who do not know the spiritual implication of what Leah did, said she was left behind due to her stubbornness.
With this unique and exceptional courage, Leah became an instant heroine. A star and an example of what a true Christian should be. She was the only Christian among the abducted students. Her unshakable faith in Christianity and love for God are commendable. She did what many so-called powerful men of God cannot do. She did what even Peter, a senior apostle of Jesus Christ, who witnessed mighty and powerful miraculous works of Jesus Christ, could not do. Peter denied Jesus three times when confronted with death.
By that singular act, little Leah has joined the great men and women of faith in the Bible. Such people as Daniel, Shedrach, Meshach and Abednego. Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den. Shedrach, Meshach and Abednego were thrown into the burning fiery furnace for their refusal to worship the babylonian god of golden image, but they were neither hurt nor burnt.
Mrs. Sharibu, Leah’s mother, said that she was only waiting on God. She said, “If God says Leah my daughter will come back home, she will surely come back home no matter how long it takes. But if God says she won’t come back, I would still give Him all the glory because He is the author and finisher of our faith. I can’t question His decision at all”. She said she had no regrets for what her daughter, Leah did. “I cannot blame her for that”. She did what was right in the sight of God, and the family is fully behind her on that decision. Leah stood by her faith and the family are proud of her.
On Leah’s life, she said, Leah is an exceptional girl every mother would be proud of. She said Leah is kindhearted, humble and hardworking, and knows how to live with people without hurting them deliberately. “I brought her up with the fear of God and also thought her how to love and respect people, particularly the elders. Leah loves God and people so much. She shares whatever she has with people, and everybody is fond of her. It was her loving spirit that endears her to people”.
Also speaking in the same vein, Mr. Nathan Sharibu, Leah’s father, said that his hope and that of his family were in God. He said “that God his daughter, Leah, did not denounce, would surely rescue her from Boko Haram, the same way God rescued Daniel from the lion’s den”. But if she did not return home, they would still be grateful to God so far as she did not deny Christ, her Saviour, he added.
Donald Sharibu, Leah’s younger brother, said Leah’s dream was to be a medical doctor so that she could help humanity. He said he was missing Leah sorely because they did things together. But then, he still encouraged his parents to be strong, and that anything that happens in this world has a purpose and designed by God. He said that he felt proud because Leah did not deny Jesus Christ and hoped that Christ would save her.
Leah’s pastor and sunday school teacher in Evangelical Church of West Africa, now Evangelical Church of Winning All (ECWA), Dapchi, Yobe State, Rev. Daniel Auta and Mr. Godwin Moses respectively, spoke glowingly about Leah’s humility and dedication to the things of God. They said the church was missing her greatly, especially in the choir, Sunday school and youth meetings where she was an active member. They said she was strong in faith and in spiritual life.
Christians should pray and fast for Leah’s safe return to her parents and the Christian fold. She should be celebrated and cited as an example of what a true Christian should be. I salute Leah Sharibu, an iron girl of faith, for exceptional courage and exemplary Christian life. May God guide and rescue her from her abductors.
