The Independent Na
tional Electoral Commission (INEC), River State, says it was excited and satisfied that the 2015 general elections in the state were peaceful.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Mrs Gesila Khan, stated this recently in an award ceremony held in her honour at the state headquarters of the commission.
In her speech, the REC expressed appreciation that following events before, during and after the elections, she was still found worthy to be given an award,
As you had recounted as interested observers, all decisions and actions taken during the 2015 elections by INEC Rivers management were guided by laid down principles and due process.
We carried out all assignments in the best interest of the electorate taken under her watch to enhance an over all peaceful election in the state.
During the voter education/enlightenment and campaigns on peaceful elections carried out by the commission before the elections we took deliberate steps to reach out to all stakeholders, including the youth.
‘We are indeed proud to say that the elections were peaceful in Rivers State, and there were no post-election violence’, she said.
Earlier in his speech, president of the Joint Assembly of Rivers State Youths”, the group that gave her the award, Gashon Bob Achor, explained why they decided to give her an award of merit”.
After recalling the steps the REC took from the date she assumed office in the state in January 2015, to enthrone peaceful elections, Achor noted that she was meticulous without prejudice.
‘From our independent observation, we must say there was no violence experienced in Rivers State, during and after the elections as those who complained of violence have already approached the court, and are being attended to.
It is based on adequate preparation that doused the tension in the state and ensured the success recorded in the election that we decided to confer a merit award, which we don’t give out so easily, to Dame Gesila Khan”, he said.
