RSSDA Sets Up Agro Support Centres
In an effort to decentralise
the activities of the Rivers Songhai project to all parts of the state, the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) has set up eight agricultural support centres in the state.
The Executive Director of the agency, Mr. Noble Pepple who disclosed this at the commissioning of the pilot Agro Support Centre at Onne, in Eleme Local Government Area, last Wednesday, said that the move was in line with the drive by the Amaechi’s government to achieve food sufficiency in the state.
Mr. Pepple said that the Onne Agro Centre would provide support to famers in the three local government areas in appreciation of new farming technology, the use of mechanised farming as well as improving the skills of the farmers.
He described the centres as a product of partnership and expressed optimism that, the affected farmers would avail themselves of the opportunities provided by the centres to improve their skills.
While commissioning the centre, the Rivers State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Chinda described the programme as a robust plan that would enable farmers in the rural areas to avail themselves of the services of the Rivers Songhai Farm Project. According to him, the Songhai progrmame was being taken to farmers in all villages in the state.
The commissioner said that with the development, the government had now created room for mechanised farming in the state.
The chairman of the occasion, Professor B. B. Fakae said that the sitting of the centre at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Agricultural Training Centre was indication of the collaboration between the University and the Agency, Professor Fakae who as the Vice Chancellor of the University also commended the RSSDA for supporting the dreams of the founding fathers of the university through sustainable agricultural programme.
He pledged the continuous support of the university to the Agency to ensure the success of the programme.
