RSG To Sustain Campaign Against Bunkering, Vandalisation
The Rivers State Government has promised to sustain the
campaign against pipeline vandalisation and illegal oil bunkering in the state.
Chairman of the Committee for the Protection and
Preservation of Pipeline Right of Way, Mr. Charles Gogo, who said this during
the committee’s visit to some local government areas, described those involved
in the act as economic saboteurs.
Gogo said the situation has led to environmental degradation
in the state while vital economic resources such as seafood have been
destroyed.
According to him, the situation has rendered many fishermen
and farmers without any source of livelihood, stressing that this has
underscored the need for a change of attitude by youths in the communities.
The committee chairman also urged the youths to take
advantage of the various skill acquisition programmes introduced by the present
administration to improve themselves instead of indulging in illegal
activities.
He also urged those whose properties are on government right
of ways to immediately remove them.
In their various speeches, the Chairman of Andoni Local
Government Area, Hon. Orom Nte Ereforukuma and his Opobo/Nkoro counterpart,
Hon. Maclean Uranta promised drastic measures against persons involved in the
acts.
Some youths at the meeting urged for job creation by the
government to check their involvement in the acts.
The local government areas visited by the committee include,
Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro, Eleme and Tai local government areas.
