NAWOJ Harps On Professional Ethics
The South-South Zonal meeting of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists which was held at Monty Suites Calabar recently, has ended with a call on members to be focused in the discharge of their duties while remaining committed to the ethnics of the journalism profession.
Attended by the chairmen and secretaries of NAWOJ in Akwa Ibom, Edo and Cross River States, the zonal meeting was also graced by female journalists, members of Naval Officers Wives, NOWA, NAOS, NCWS, FIDA, Girls Power Initiative, among others, as well as Mass Communication Students of CRUTECH, Calabar.
A lecture on “The Nigerian Women and the Challenge of Transformational Leadership” was presented by Dr Scholastica Ekwere of the University of Calabar.
At the end of the opening ceremony the members of the South-South Zonal Executives met and came out with the following eight-point ‘communique.
The chairman and secretaries commended Cross River State NAWOJ for providing excellent and hospitable hosting of the South-South Zonal meeting.
South-South NAWOJ expressed concerned over the deplorable condition of federal roads in the south-south zone and called on the Federal Government and relevant authorities to rehabilitate the Port Harcour-Benin-Ore road, the Calabar-Ogoja road, and the Calabar –Itu road.
They commended the Governors of south-south states for forging ahead in bringing issues concerning the zone to the fore and urged them to take the issues of security, more seriously.
South-South NAWOJ commended state Governors that have fully implemented the 18,000 naira minimum wage in their states and called on other governors in the zone and country to follow suit.
In view of the forthcoming elections in some states in the South-South zone, the women journalists called for a peaceful and credible conduct of the electoral process.
South-South NAWOJians observed with dismay the unfriendly disposition and lack of commitment that exists within some executives of NAWOJ in the zone, and urged NAWOJ members to change their attitude so that the Association can move to greater heights.
The Women Journalists condemned the unconstitutional impeachment of the Edo State Chairman of NAWOJ and called on all the parties involved to channel their grievances to the National Executive Committee, NEC-the highest decision making body of NAWOJ, for appropriate action.
In conclusion, South-South NAWOJ urged members to be focused in the discharge of their duties while remaining committed to the ethics of the journalism profession, particularly during the gender mainstreaming process.
