Judiciary To Create More Juvenile Courts
The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Iche Ndu has said that the judiciary would create more juvenile courts to decongest the existing one for effective delivery of justice.
Justice Ndu stated this when the newly elected executive of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Rivers State, visited him at the High Court Complex.
The Chief Judge who assured FIDA of creating a family court as granted by the law, called for continued partnership between the organisation and the Judiciary.
Responding to the request for allocation of land to FIDA, Justice Ndu informed the organisation that it is only the Governor that has the power to allocate land and advised them to channel their request through the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.
He promised to make rooms available to FIDA within the court complex to enable the organisation continue to carry out its functions.
On the issue of appointment of woman as chairman of customary court, he explained that only those experienced in the customs of the people were eligible for appointment and advised FIDA to look out for advertisement on future appointments so as to apply.
Earlier, the chairman of FIDA, Eucharia Somiari Pepple explained that they were in his office to introduce their new EXCO and to request for the domestication of the child rights Act as well as the establishment of additional juvenile court in Bori and Ahoada, noting that lawyers handling juvenile within the area could go there instead of coming to Port Harcourt.
