Toby Tasks Rotarians On Service To Humanity
The Former Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Sir G.T.G. Toby has called on Rotarians in district 9140 not to waver in their commitment to serve humanity in keeping with the philosophy of the Rotary club.
Speaking during the international night organised by the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA District 9140, Sir Toby said that the Rotary Foundation has continued to remain a beacon of hope for the under privileged, the world over.
The Former Deputy Governor said that as poverty, diseases, sufferings continue to persist in the world, so also will the Rotary Club remain meaningful to the people of the world.
He commended the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA for organising the international night which is celebrated in the Rotary world to foster friendship among people of different nationalities.
In his lecture entitled: “The Rotary Spirit and Development,” the guest lecturer, Mr Amabipi Martins said that the Rotary International has accomplished so much in its chosen areas of service because of the collective desire and resolve of its members.
He also said that the club is not only offering hope, but translating ideals to reality.
“The Rotary is an NGO (Non Governemntal Organisation), but its deep-seated humanitarianism propelled by the agonies of the “wretched of the earth,” has moved beyond what governments could not do in the eradication of polio, offered scholarships in education, rendered community services and lots more.”
Mr Martins who was a former General Manager of the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation (RSNC) stressed the need for local government councils and other government agencies to emulate the club in the utilisation of resources.
The event was attended by citizens of other nations including channels, Cameroonians, British, French among others.
