Revive Kpong Farm Project, Don Tells NDBDA
Miffed by the long abandonment of a multimillion naira agricultural project labeled “Kpong Farm Project,” by the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority ( NDBDA), a university lecturer and agriculture engineering expert, Dr. Alex Akor has challenged the agency to revive the scheme.
Dr. Akor in an exclusive chat with The Tide said the project located in Khana local government would have improved food production tremendously in the state if the agency had fully implemented the scheme.
He stated that though attempts were made five years ago to revive the scheme, he could not pinpoint any reason why it was suddenly abandoned, despite the huge facilities and infrastructures already in place.
Dr Akor remarked,” that project was well articulated and is a brainchild of NDBDA 15 years ago or so. If you go there a lot of houses and facilities built to facilitate the programme are wasting away.”
The university don called on the federal government to set up a team to study and revive the scheme. He noted that the Niger Delta did not have any major agricultural project despite its huge natural resources and arable soil.
Commenting on why most agric based projects were neglected, Dr. Akor blamed politics and Corruption in the polity.
He argued that agriculture was a very sensitive sector that should not be left in the hands of politicians alone, since it is the mainstay of any economy and population.
The agriculture expert also lauded the Rivers State Government for embarking on building the first sanitary fill in the state.
He explained that the project expected to curb waste management problems would equally safegund the lives of the citizenry by reducing the pollution of underground water.
