Mrs Amaechi Decries Drug Abuse Among Rural Youths
Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi has decried youths and under-aged children’s involvement in drug trafficking in rural communities.
Dame Judith Amaechi who made the assertion in a statement to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and IIIicit Trafficking said the involvement of under-aged children in drug abuse and illicit trafficking is quite worrisome and advised that campaigns be shifted to rural areas with youths as the target.
The Governor’s wife further stated that most rural communities have become drug trafficking routes whereby patrons make youths vulnerable to crime through involvement in the illicit trade.
According to her, “our rural communities have become a trafficking network for drug barons and patrons who have made youths in the communities vulnerable to crime and sometimes restive.
The founder of the Employment Support Initiative (ESI) commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA and United Nations effort at combating drug trafficking in the society and added, the crusade will be more successful if communities sincerely collaborate with these agencies.
“The United Nation’s office on drug and crime leads the international campaign aimed at raising awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent on our youths and the effect on the society, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency are doing their best to arrest the situation, the communities have not done enough because they have allowed their people and drug businessmen use their places as links to drug trafficking.
Mrs Amaechi while commending the federal government peace initiative in the Niger Delta region, called for a holistic approach in tackling drug trafficking among the rural communities especially within the coastline area “while we commend the federal government peace initiative in the Niger Delta region, it should beam its attention on some of the causal factors of restiveness including drug abuse and trafficking.”
She disclosed that her NGO the Empowerment Support Initiative (ESI) will collaborate with the relevant agencies in the crusade against drug addiction and illicit trafficking in rural communities.
June 26th every year is marked by the United Nations as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The Theme for this year’s celebration is “Do Drugs Control Your Life Community, No Place For Drug.”

VIO HOLDS COLLABORATIVE MEETING WITH AUPCTRE IN RIVERS STATE
The Chief of the Rivers State Road Traffic and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), Engr. Akobo Monibo, alongside other executive officers of the agency, received the leadership of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Employees (AUPCTRE), Rivers State Council, during a courtesy and interactive meeting held at the office of the Chief VIO.
The delegation was led by the State Chairman of AUPCTRE, Comrade Tamunoiminabo Toby, accompanied by other executive members of the union.
Speaking during the meeting, Engr. Akobo Monibo expressed appreciation to the union leadership for identifying with the VIO at this crucial time and commended the union for its commitment towards workers’ welfare and institutional development.
According to him, the responsibilities of the VIO remain enormous and vital to the development of a safer transportation system within the state.
In his response, the State Chairman of AUPCTRE, Comrade Tamunoiminabo Toby, appreciated the warm reception and hospitality extended to the union delegation by the leadership of the VIO.
He explained that the purpose of the courtesy visit was to facilitate the establishment of an AUPCTRE Unit or Chapter within the VIO, noting that the union already has members within the Ministry of Transport and other related agencies.
The chairman further emphasized the benefits of union membership, especially in promoting workers’ welfare, unity, cooperation, and professional representation within government establishments.
Also speaking during the meeting, the Deputy Chief VIO, Comrade Livings Denoi, appreciated the union for the visit and welcomed the move towards establishing a VIO Chapter of AUPCTRE, describing it as a positive step toward strengthening collaboration and staff welfare within the agency.
Other personalities present during the meeting included Sup. Stella Jacks and the State Secretary of AUPCTRE, Comrade Okpeyeme Adebajo, alongside other officials from both organizations.
The meeting ended on a cordial note, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to partnership, institutional growth, and the promotion of efficient service delivery in Rivers State.
