UNEP Report: Elemes Want Distinct Recognition As Ethnic Group
Following the recent
steps taken by the Federal Government towards the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report on the clean-up of Ogoni environment, the Eleme ethnic nationality in Rivers State has appealed to the Federal Government to accord it recognition as a distinct nationality in the Niger Delta.
This was contained in a communiqué made available to newsmen at the end of the general meeting of all the people of Eleme held at the Eleme civic centre recentl.
The communiqué signed by the President General of Eleme General Assembly; Evangelist Jonah Chujor, said that the people would continue to seek for special recognition as far as the UNEP report was concerned, It noted that while oil production has stopped in Ogoniland since 1990, that of Eleme has continued till date.
According to the communiqué; “That on the issue of the UNEP report, we maintain our stand in the paper presented to the federal government through the Mathew Kukah-led committee on federal government/Shell reconciliation with oil producing communities in Rivers State in 2007.
“That we the Eleme people are separate people from the Ogonis hence cannot be lumped up with them in the various steps taken towards the implementation of the UNEP report.
“That while oil production stopped in Ogoniland since 1990, that of Eleme has continued from 1956 till date, thereby creating more devastating impact on the people of Eleme Ethnic Nationality.”
While commending the federal government for steps taken so for towards the implementation, the Assembly argued that whatever is due the Ogonis should be given to them, while that of Eleme should equally be given us instead of lumping us together under an Ogoni umbrella.
