Weekly Sanitation: Association Imposes Fine On Defaulters
Traders Association
at the Mile III Market Port Harcourt, is imposing a fine ranging from N500 to N1000 on those who fail to clean up their stalls during the Thursday weekly sanitation exercise.
The Chairman of the Association, Hon Vincent Nnokam, who disclosed this to The Tide reporters in Port Harcourt, also send that the Association was collaborating with the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RSWMA) to ensure regular cleanliness of the market.
Hon Nnokam also said that apart from the fine, defaulters should also have their shops locked up.
He said that the move has brought sanity to both the market and environs, noting that the situation has heightened competition among store owners as far as cleanliness was concerned.
The association chairman also told The Tide that the market security committee was working with the police to safeguard lives and property during and after market hours.
According to him, the security committee members operate from 6pm to 8am everyday, pointing out that the arrangement is yielding result as no bad report has been received in the last seven years.
He, however, decried the bad condition of roads especially at the back entrance to the market, stressing that apart from the poor state of the road, some persons have formed the habit of littering the area with all kinds of waste and urged the government to come to their aid. “Free movement from that part into the market is very difficult and some persons have also turned the area into dumpsite,” he said.
