RSG Cautions Against Use Of Tyres To Roast Meat

The Rivers State Govern
ment has warned abattoir operators against the continous use of tyres to roast meat.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr Nyema Weli handed down the warning during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise at Rumuelechi abattoir Mile III, Port Harcourt.
Dr Weli, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Godwin Mpi and directors, said that the continuous use of tyres in the preparation of meat is posing serious health challenges to the people.
The commissioner also decried the unsanitary conditions of the abattoir, stressing that the operators by their activities are contributing to the health problem of the society.
He said that the ministry would continue to sensitise abattoir operators across the state on the need to adopt standard practice in the preparations of their meat.
Dr Weli also directed members of the Rumuelechi abattoir to report to his office within 21 days with their plan of action on how to keep the environment clean.
Also speaking, the state Acting Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Oliver Wolugbom said that, the problems of abattoirs in the state need the collaboration of all stakeholders to solve.
He said that both the state and local government as well as Butchers Association must sit down together to discuss the problems of abattoirs with the view to finding solution to them.
Mr Wolugbom however, commended the ministry of environment for its campaign towards the eradication of unhealthy practices in abattoir and assured of the Agency’s Support.
