Seme Customs Records Revenue Boost
The Seme Command of Nigeria Customs Services has reported an impressive performance in its revenue generation drive and anti-smuggling campaign for 2012.
A statement signed by the command Public Relation Officer, Mr. Ernest Ollota, a Deputy Superintendent of Customs (DSC) and made available to The Tide in Lagos, stated that the command collected N7,986,073,939.43 into the federation Account as against the N6,243,649,157.90 which the command recorded in 2011.
Comparatively, the total revenue the command generated in 2012, which includes import and excise duties, levies and taxes is about 45 per cent higher than what it collected in the preceding year.
Giving an insight into the astronomical increase on the revenue that the command generated in 2012, the Custom Area Controller, Comptroller Abdu Saleh Othman revealed that the aggressive and effective anti- smuggling campaign, and strategies it adopted forced the smugglers to resort to legitimate declaration of imports, and subsequent duty payments instead of risking seizures of their goods.
“The strategies adopted in the anti smuggling operation resulted in the Command making 480 seizures of various goods with a Duty paid Value (DPV) of N227,035,726.00.The seized items include vegetable oil, narcotics, motor vehicles, rice, frozen poultry products, textile materials, used tyres, leather shoes and bags”.
The reports also indicated that the Command made seizures of some dutiable goods for which duty payments were being evaded.
On the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) which was designed to encourage trade among West African Countries, Compt. Othman said any attempt to circumvent or abuse the scheme would be detected and the consignments in question intended to be used to evade government revenue would be confiscated in line with the law.
He warned that the command under his watch would uphold the Comptroller- General of Customs Zero tolerance for smuggling in 2013 while assuring stakeholders in legitimate trans borders trade, of customs support and co-operation in the areas of trade facilitation.
Meanwhile, the command’s image maker Mr. Earnest Ollota (DSC) reminded men and officers of the command that the Comptroller General of Custom, Alhaji Inde Abdullah Dikko that posted them to man one of the frontiers between Nigeria and Benin Republic, is constantly monitoring their activities because of the vital nature of the command, especially when the country is facing some security challenges adding that they should realise that as people entrusted with enormous national responsibility of securing the country’s borders, they should not waiver in carrying out that responsibility with any sense of patriotism.
