Before Lawan Is Crucified
On 1st January, 2012, Nigeria was thrown into fuel subsidy removal brouhaha. Reasons upon reasons were given by government and its agencies to support the decision. There were accusations and counter-accusations in support and against the fuel subsidy removal. According to government, some importers were fraudulent and were feeding fat on the subsidy regime policy. Some collected fuel subsidy without making supply. In the heat of fuel subsidy removal and its untold hardship, the federal government quickly announced palliative measures to cushion the effects on Nigerians even though the palliatives promised are not forthcoming.
Nigerians were made to believe that those who enriched themselves and impoverished the general public would be probed and prosecuted according to the law of the land. That alone pacified angry Nigerians who were asking for probe of these fraudulent importers.
The House of Representatives set the ball rolling by setting up a probe committee headed by Hon. Farouk Lawan to unravel the fuel subsidy fraud. The committee’s report has since been submitted to the presidency. And as Nigerians were waiting to see the implementation of the report, Nigerians were fed with another mosel of corruption, courtesy of Femi Otedola-Lawan scandal.
Indeed, the bribery allegation against fuel subsidy probe committee should be handled with common sense. If government is sincere, those companies that defrauded it through fuel subsidy must be punished according to the law. There is need to first of all look at the report of the committee before nailing the chairman, Hon. Farouk Lawan. The said six hundred and twenty thousand dollars ($620,000.00), allegedly collected by Lawan and Boniface Emealo is afterall, far below the trillion of naira siphoned by the oil marketers through fuel subsidy. It is high time the Nigerian government ignored some certain tricks to divert attention from the substance. Probe is working in other parts of the world. But in Nigeria, each time there is probe, those indicted create a scene to undermine the report. This has been a usual practice each time there is a probe committee set up to check high magnitude of fraud or crime committed in the country. Both the fuel subsidy scandal and the bribery allegation are bad omen that should not be swept under the carpet.
It has become a regular and perfect practice that each time there is a probe those affected use bribe to destroy the effort and expectations of Nigerians. But I do not think it will work this time. If the report of the probe committee is thrown out, then there will be more sharp practices in Nigeria. What happened to the power probe where sixteen billion dollars voted for power project was unjustifiably embezzled by those who feel they are untouchable by Nigerian government should not repeat itself. While the chairman of the committee that probed the power sector, Hon. Ndidi Elumelu and others were arrested over bribery allegation, those who paid the bribe and have been keeping Nigeria in darkness till date did not even face interrogation for one second. What a country! All these inhuman and anti-economic activities leading to under development of the country should stop.
Hon. Farouk Lawan has been stripped off of all his positions in the House of Representatives whereas Otedola is still smiling in fortune. This cannot happen in civilised countries.
In America, one of the businessmen who defrauded the government some billions of dollars was sentenced to one hundred and fifty years (150 years) imprisonment. Why can’t this happen in Nigeria? True Nigerians are not happy the way mischievous people are allowed to go free. This subsidy probe report should not be like others where defaulters were celebrated.
The president promised Nigerians through the presidential spokesman that no matter the bribery allegation against the committee the probe report must be implemented. That statement alone has placed Nigerians on another vigil of waiting and watching the true implementation. It is time to bring defaulters to book. Enough is enough of probe without implementation in Nigeria. In some countries those who defrauded were asked to refund whatever they have taken illegally from government’s coffer. The insincerity observed some years back in the aspect of probe panel should not be allowed to come on board again. Government should implement the probe report without much delay.
I wonder why many probe panels have been set up without result in the long-run. Is it that those who bribed panel members to scuttle probe report are given protection by the government to do such nefarious act?
Even if the bribe was received by Lawan, both the giver and the receiver should face the music and not just the receiver alone.
