TAF Africa Educates 48 PWDs On Inclusive Elections
A Non-Governmental Organisation, TAF Africa, Tuesday, sensitised 48 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Edo State on their rights to participate in the forth coming governorship election in the State.
The Senior Programme Officer, TAF Africa, Mr George Anwayi, said in Benin that political participation was a fundamental aspect of democratic government.
“We are advocating that PWDs participate in the forthcoming Edo gubernatorial election and also that deliberate actions were on to include them in elections”, he said.
He recommended that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should work with relevant stakeholders in effective mobilisation of PWDs in election participation.
“PWDs should be assisted with data collection as well as distribution of assistive devices. PWDs should mobilise themselves and engage INEC on their needs”, he stated.
Head of Unit, CSOs/PWDs, INEC, Edo State, Mr Emmanuel Dedekuma, said the commission had modalities for PWDs to participate easily in the September 21, Edo governorship election.
According to Dedekuma, the commission is working to mainstream PWDs into the electoral process. We have started it already and it is still ongoing.
“Before now, we have made materials available for them. On the day of the election, PWDs should look out for magnifying glasses for persons with albinism, braille ballot guide for the blind and posters for the deaf.
“We can equally see how we can tell officers during our training that they should not put their polling units on a high ramp, so that those on wheelchairs and clutches can easily access them”, he said.Edo Chairperson, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Ann Ojugo, said the association had sensitised its members on the need to participate in politics and elections.
Ojugo, however, noted that there was still voter apathy among PWDs in the state, calling on INEC to intensify its voters’ education at the grassroots.
He said, “On voters apathy, the political parties should ensure inclusion, and we are urging our members to be card-carrying members of political parties, we believe that this will also reduce voters’ apathy’’.
