Community Demands Employment Quota From Public, Private Institutions
There are strong indications that the Ekeki Community of Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State may soon commence demanding for employment quota for its indigenes from public and private establishment located in the community.
Paramount Ruler of the community, HRH Alia Neze (Isu xvi), revealed this during a recent fact finding visit by newsmen to his palace on the community’s relationship with public and private sector establishments located in the area.
The monarch faulted management of various establishments of the duo sectors with presence in the community, saying there have been successive denial of indigenes of the community job placements by establishments in the community.
“Ekeki is one community that has been very hospitable to both public and private sector establishments that are located within its vicinity.
“When other communities where apprehensive of releasing lands for Government projects, this community released theirs without any rancour because we love development.
“This community released land for the building of the state-owned radio station. It was in the same spirit of development that we also released land for the first House of Assembly estate, the NTA building, the Ekeki Central Motor Park, the NUJ Secretariat, etc.
“There’s also a number of private sector establishments in this community, the Akwa-Ibom Motor Park, the Peace Motor Park, hotels, eateries and many more, but as we speak, whenever our people approach them for employment, what they’ve consistently told us was that they’ve people they want to employ”, he said.
He continued that “For the Government establishments in this community, for instance, in Radio Bayelsa, my wife before I became the paramount ruler of this community was working there. But it was so unfortunate that she was the first victim of Government sack in the guise of verification.
“And so, very soon, we want to start demanding for employment quota from these various establishments in our community because all along they’ve been shortchanging us while we’ve been silent over it due to our peaceful nature as a community”, the monarch added.
