Gov’s Wife Pledges Collaboration Against GBV
Wife of the Delta State Governor and Founder, “You Matter Charity Foundation”, Mrs Tobore Oborevwori, has pledged to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to put an end to issues of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the State.
She said this in Asaba recently, while receiving members of the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The visit was in line with activities to mark the 2023 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
The Governor’s wife commended the various groups for the commitment toward a worthy cause.
“Every woman has the right to freedom of existence and a peaceable one at that.
“With dedication, perseverance and intentional collaboration, we can achieve a state and world free of gender-based violence.
“On my part, I promise to collaborate with various agencies to see an end to the issue of gender-based violence, especially against women and children”, she said.
She donated N5 million to the group of activists as a way of supporting their movement.
Leader of the delegation and the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mr Pat Ajudua, stressed the need for increased actions toward combating gender-based violence.
According to her, the theme for this year’s activism is “Accelerating Actions to End Gender-Based Violence & Femicide: Leaving No One Behind”.
Also, the Director, Sexual Offences, Domestic Violence and Child’s Rights Unit, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Uche Akamagwuna, said a lot had been achieved by the State Government.
According to her, in a space of one year, over 22 judgements in sexual related offences have been secured under the Delta State Sexual Offences Register.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, commended the ministry of Women Affairs and called for continued sensitization beyond the 16 Days of Activism.
The global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is a key international moment to call for an end to violence against women and girls.
