Labour Battles Imo Govt, Bars Flight From Lagos
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has resurrected its cold war with the Imo State Government by announcing that it has resolved to paralyse aviation sector in the state.
The grievances of the Labour movement are hinged on the disruption of its May Day celebrations in the state.
On Tuesday, it sent out a notification to its Lagos State Council to begin immediate mobilisation of its affiliate unions in the aviation sector in order to prevent any flight from leaving Lagos State for Owerri, Imo State capital.
General-Secretary of NLC, Emmanuel Ugboaja, revealed this in an official memo to the Lagos branch of the Congress.
The memo directed that the halting of flights to the South East state begins tomorrow (Wednesday) by 12 midnight.
Ugboaja had stated that an emergency meeting of the Central Working Committee of the NLC was immediately summoned shortly after the May Day celebrations were disrupted.
Its statement reads, “Following the violent disruption of our May Day festivities in Imo state yesterday by the Imo state Governor, an emergency CWC meeting of the NLC and TUC was held at the National Headquarters.
“We resolved that we embark on a comprehensive industrial action against the State Government beginning from Wednesday the 3th day of May, 2023
“Consequently, as part of our effort to enforce compliance, you are kindly requested to work with the TUC and other affiliates especially those in the aviation sector to ensure that no flight leaves the Lagos Airport to Owerri, Imo state starting from 12 Midnight today.
“Ensure that you put all effort into achieving full compliance. Do remain assured of the commitment of the leadership of the congress towards the protection of workers in all parts of this country.”
Recall that while workers across the country celebrated the May Day festivities, there was a violent disruption of the event in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
There are allegations of a pending issue regarding a botched election of NLC in April where the State governor, Hope Uzodinma, was accused of meddling in the affairs of the congress.
The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero shortly upon resumption of office had his first major confrontation with the Imo state government, where he accused the state of high handedness regarding workers in the state.
