Rivers Chief Judge Grants 37 Inmates Pardon …Warns Police Against Filing Cases Without Evidence
The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, has granted pardon to 37 inmates who have been at the Port Harcourt Maximum Correctional Center for five years and above awaiting trial without their cases being properly prosecuted.
Justice Amadi announced the pardon while speaking during a special gaol delivery exercise held at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre, recently.
He warned the Police who are the lead agency in prosecution and filing of criminal charges against suspects in magistrate court to desist from filing any criminal charges they cannot prosecute and provide enough evidences before the court.
He blamed the Police for high level of congestion experienced in Port Harcourt Correctional Center.
The Chief Judge also accused the Police of filing frivolous charges against many suspects without proper investigation, and advised the police operatives to always ensure that proper investigation on every matter is carried out before rushing to court.
He called on all those involved in administration of justice to collaborate and work in synergy to ensure that correctional centres are decongested.
He directed magistrates and judges handling criminal matters including rape, cultism, kidnapping and armed robbery to ensure speedy trial and early conclusion of such matters.
Justice Amadi revealed that Port Harcourt Correctional Center has the highest number of inmates in West Africa and assured that the judiciary under his watch would continue to ensure decongestion of the centres in the state in compliance with Section 31 sub-section 1 of the administration of justice.
The Chief Judge advised the released inmates to be better citizens as they rejoined with the society and never to exhibit characters that would bring them back to prison again.
Earlier in his welcome address, the State Comptroller of the Nigerian Correctional Center, Mr. Alex Oditah, commended the state judiciary for continuous efforts in decongesting the facilities.
