LG Boss Moves To Check Environmental Degradation In Opobo/Nkoro …Warns Illegal Sand Dredgers Against Operation
Illegal sand dredgers in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State have been given a matching order to stop their activities or be ready to face the full weight of the law.
The Chairman of the council, Dr Enyiada Cookey-Gam, who gave the warning while speaking with journalists, recently, on the nefarious activities of the sand dredgers in Opobo, said the directive was borne out of the need to prevent some communities in the area from degradation and devastation of the ecosystem, usually caused by the activities of the illegal sand dredgers.
Cookey-Gam warned that, henceforth, any sand dredger caught in any illegal activities would be thoroughly dealt with according to the law.
Meanwhile, the chairman, last week, led the government team to some dredging sites in Kalama axis of the area, especially Ekeregborokiri, Minimah, Epellema, Iwoama, Queens Town and Opobo Town, among others.
During the visit, the team intercepted some dredgers and impounded equipment at Ekeregborokiri as well as apprehended some operators of the illicit activities.
Cookey-Gam, said that the sand dredging has caused serious degradation to the ecosystem, and has also altered the original road design of some of the bridges and roads approved for construction by the state government.
He said with its devastating effect on the environment, the council could not fold its hands and watch the area being destroyed.
According to him,the design for the columns on the internal roads originally was 9.6metres but because of the persistent dredging, the columns have been moved to 38metres.
He warned that if dredging activity was allowed to continue, the columns would move up to 50metres, thereby making the process more expensive to government.
Cookey-Gam admonished those who wish to dredge sand in the area to go to the high seas, and stop the operation on shallow waters as such activities have grave consequences on the environment.
