Yuletide Euphoria And Us (Part Two)
In the last edition of this column, Catalogue, I highlighted the essence and reasons for the celebration of Christmas and condemned satanic infiltrations into the festivities.
Christmas which was first celebrated in the 533AD in Rome has metamorphosed into practices that are totally strange to Christian practices.
The behavior of Christians and none Christians alike during the Yuletide season leaves much to be desired. There is unbridled quest for money, cheating and mad rush to accomplish perceived annual targets by individuals.
The sad commentary in the entire charismas euphoria is the hike in prices of goods and services which include food stuffs and transport fares. The penchant for quick money drives traders into cheating, which manifest in different forms.
Traders in the state and elsewhere who profess Christianity forget the reason for the season and use the period to exploit other citizens including their Christian brethren.
However, while we blame the common people for shoddy deals during theYuletide and other festivities, one cannot explain why fuel scarcity has become a common feature .What could be responsible for the bottlenecks and administrative conflicts that give rise to fuel increase within the NNPC and DPR?.
It is pertinent to find out at this juncture why the issues of subsidy and other regulatory frame works that are anti-people should rear their ugly heads during the Yuletide.
It is often factors of unpredictability in the system that pushes both the peddlers and owners of Gas stations to horde and increase price of fuel beyond reasonable limits, they speculate increases or adjustments policies in the downstream sector because of policy volatility.
Those on the receiving ends are usually the common people, who have to contend with the hike in transportation and attendant high cost of living. These developments diminish the joy of Christmas in many homes. They are joy killers. Fatalities associated with greed and mad rush by transporters contribute to sad moments during the season.
Over the years the exciting sights and sounds that bring joy to the people of Rivers State is the extensive itinerary of inauguration and flag offs of projectsby the state government. The choice of the Yuletide season for inauguration of projects has become a pleasant coincidence to the people of the state.
The train and the trail for inauguration of projects took the state Governor to the GRA Flyover and the dualized Ezimgbu Road in the state capital which extends to Tombia Extention up to Ikwerre Road. There was also the novel project called SAFE HOME in Borokiri. This project is new in the annals of Welfare Development in Nigeria. The Home is a safe haven for victims of domestic violence precisely gender based sexual violence and other forms of violations.
The Safe Home Borokiri has standard facilities such as Court Buildings for Magistrates and Judges, Administration Building and other accessories which include Hostels, Child friendly witness rooms. Others are Libraries, Probation Units, Counseling Units and Service Providers offices.
This project is a peace building institution which will bring relief and justice to those who are in abusive relationship. In a time such as this Yuletide it is important to remember those who are in the trauma of bad marriage relationship, those who are looking for protection from abusive spouses and needing where to go .
The state government is telling such unfortunate persons MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAVE HOPE FOR JUSTICE HAS COME AT LAST. The Christmas season is a season of charity and a time to exhibit the divine love of Christ. It is a time of sharing and compassion for the less fortunate members of our society.
There wouldn’t have been a better time to reassure those in such situations that government is willing and able to protect them than now.
The Government of Rivers State has remained resolute to address the issue of infrastructural deficit in the state. No wonder Governor Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom State described Governor Nyesom Wike as the Pride of PDP and South-South states.
It is the responsibility of government under the law to take care of all citizens including the vulnerable members of the society.
Rivers State Government has demonstrated political will in this direction. Road infrastructures, including flyovers have received tremendous attention in the development agenda of the state government. The government again brought joy to the people of the state during this Yuletide by inaugurating a number of roads and bridges in this current wave of project delivery.
The GRA FLYOVER and the Ezimgbu Road Dualization project have added value to traffic and logistics management in the state capital. Driving on the road infrastructure will bring a lot of joy to the people. This development is in the true spirit of the season. Beyond the painting of road media and pavements, the present administration has seen the need to depart from the white wash of the past that provided transient aesthetics.
Delivery of sustainable projects by this time of the year is laudable and will surely add value to government people relationship.
The people must follow the examples of the government by striving to bring joy to their fellow citizens this Yuletide .This will usher in the spirit of Christmas and not Xmas.Cheating and all negative practices that negate Christian values are demonic. Merry CHRISTMAS.
