Rivers Angels Lose Again In Egypt
It is all over for the Jewel of Rivers and Nigeria’s representatives at the ongoing maiden edition of the Total Energy/CAF Women’s Champions League in Egypt, Rivers Angels after they lost two group matches in a row at the competition.
The Angels had lost their opening group match 3-0 to AS FAR Women, their Moroccan counterparts and there were hopes that they would bounce back in the second game to have a hope of being alive in the competition. They however, succumbed to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns Women late yesterday, courtesy of a lone goal defeat.
Despite coming into the game in high spirits and having an impressive early performance, there was no coming back for the coach Edwin Okon tutored team once they went behind via a 17th minute goal by Sundowns’ Zanele Nhlapho. Though Rivers Angels had the ball in their opponent’s net when Ezenagu thought she had drawn her side level in the 53rd minute, it counted for naught as the referee ruled it out.
Earlier in the day, Rivers Angels final group’s opponent, Vihiga Queens of Kenya, who had lost their first game 0-1 to Sundowns, put themselves into reckoning with a 2-0 victory over Angels’ first game conquerors, AS FAR of Morocco. Now, only an unlikely miracle that would see the Angels go goal- crazy against Vihiga Queens and Sundowns beat AS FAR in the final group matches that can hand the Nigerian representatives a life line.
Following their defeat to the AS FAR Club of Morocco , coach Edwin Okon, had said that his side paid the price for arriving late to the competition and for the match.
The Nigerian champions were beaten 3-0 by the Morrocan side in the first Group game played in Egypt on Saturday night.
Sanaa Mssoudy’s hat-trick condemned Rivers Angels to first defeat in the Group B of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Rivers Angels who arrived Egypt just 24 hours before the kick off failed to impress in the game as the Moroccans dominated both halves.
Speaking after the game, Coach Edwin Okon said his players suffered from rigorous traveling schedule before the game.
“The team is tired from all the traveling issues and that’s the normal result. My job is to pick up their spirit, let them know that the game is over and recover for the next matches”, Coach Edwin had said in a post match interview.
