New President Pledges Inclusive NAWOJ
A new dawn emerged early yesterday morning, as Ladi Bala was elected the new National President of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), with a pledge to ensure inclusive and transparent organization of female journalists in the country.
She also reiterated her commitment to take NAWOJ to greater heights through strategic partnerships with stakeholders, including NUJ, FIDA, and other key players, while enhancing international collaborations to boost capacity building and manpower development for female journalists.
The election was conducted at the 10th triennial delegates’ conference, held in Minna, Niger State.
Bala, who is a staff of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Adamawa State, and the immediate past National Secretary of the association, defeated Aisha Daharatu from Borno State.
She polled 439 votes to beat three other contestants namely; Aisha Daharatu 251 votes, Chindaba Danjuma 85 votes, and Ruth Abubakar, who scored 48 votes.
In her acceptance speech, the NAWOJ President, Ladi Bala, promised to embark on capacity building of women journalists across the federation.
Other executive members are Mrs Lilian Okonkwo-Ogabu of Rivers State Television (RSTV) and outgone Rivers State chairperson of NAWOJ as deputy national president; Helen Udofia, national secretary; Fatima Rasheed as treasurer; while Adeola Adekunle of Ondo NAWOJ emerged financial secretary.
Earlier during the delegates’ conference, the outgone NAWOJ president, Mrs Ifeyinwa Omowole, appreciated the support of members throughout her tenure as the president.
The host of NAWOJ Minna 2020, and Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, commended women journalists for the pivotal roles they played in championing the course of the girl child.
In a paper presentation, former executive director, NTA Network, Eugenia Abu, stressed the need to corporate organisations and government to build women capacity make them head leadership positions.
