Uphold Professionalism, Ethics, RSG Urges Journalists
The Rivers State Government has tasked journalists under the umbrella of the Nigerian Union of Journalists(NUJ) to always pursue professionalism and ethics as a way of instilling integrity in their practice.
He gave the charge through the Permanent Secretary State Ministry of Information and Communications, Pastor Paulinus Nsirim, while playing host to the Zone F Vice President of NUJ, Comrade Edward Ogude, at his office Monday in Port Harcourt.
Nsirim said there was need of upgrading the NUJ to a professional organisation in the class of Lawyers , Engineers and Medical Doctors, recalling the sacrifices made by journalists towards transforming the country.
“I want to see an NUJ compare to Engineers and Lawyers,” adding that,” there is need to sanitise practise because it should not be an all comers profession.” he said.
Nsirim, who was one time chairman of the union in Rivers State, frowned at the gradual erosion of ethical standards by the new breed.
Recalling how journalists were valued in their time, Nsirim said every practitioner must strive towards excellence to maintian that status in society.
Intimating the permanent secretary on why they visited, the Zonal Vice President said they were in Port Harcourt for a zonal meeting.
Ogude stated that the meeting forms part of the quarterly stocktaking and brainstorming of the Union on how to improve the welfare and practice of journalists.
He used the forum to call for support from the State Government in the activities of the NUJ.
“Without the government support, the Council cannot succeed”, he said, adding that, “as a former Chairman you can use your position to prevail on the State Government on the welfare of journalists.”
The visit was attended by NUJ Chairmen and secretaries from Edo, Rivers, Delta and Akwa Ibom States.
