Don Wants S’East Youths To Revive Cashew, Palm Tree Plantations
Prof. Anslem Onyimloni, of University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has tasked South-East youths to revive cashew and palm tree plantations to create wealth and check generational poverty.
Onyimoni, a Professor of Animal Science in UNN gave the charge while speaking with The Tide’s source in Enugu yesterday.
The don, who was encouraging the South-East youths to embrace modern and sustainable agriculture, said both economic trees were gradually dying and should be revived.
According to him, cashew nut and oil palm tree still sell four times higher in the same measurement with the much clamoured crude oil in local and international markets.
The don noted that it was wrong for the South East to allow cashew and palm tree plantations to go extinct, while the zone had been looking for youth empowerment and genuine break from generational poverty.
He said that there was a need for youths to follow the foot-steps of the zone’s illustrious forefathers by seeing to it that money-spinning plantations were revived while using improved and high yielding seedlings for the plantations.
“Most of the large plantations that are already fading away in our eyes were planted by Dr Michael Okpara, the then Premier of the Eastern Region.
