Ikwerre Community Laments Poor Condition Of Road
The former Chairman of Community Development Committee (CDC), Umuoko-Aluu in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Chief Amadi Collins, has appealed to the state government to come to the aid of the community by intervening in the deplorable condition of Omnihuochi/Umuokoro/Omokiri link road which has become a death trap in the area.
Amadi made this appeal while speaking with newsmen at Umuoko-Aluu, last Wednesday, adding that indigenes and residents of the area have been subjected to untold hardship occasioned by the present condition of the road.
He alleged that the contracting company, China Engineering Construction Company (CECC) handling the road project has abandoned the road, leaving the people hopeless, and expressed worry that the road project had over-stayed the time of completion giving to the company by the state governor.
According to him, the project was awarded by the state government to the company in July, 2017, with a completion period of 18 months, adding that the people were happy when the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike flagged-off the road in July, 2017, and promised that he would come back within 18 months to commission the project.
“We are worried as a people. We passionately plead with His Excellency to come to our aid. We are worried because criminal activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, snatching of bags are on the increase on daily basis, even our economic activities are down.
“The number of students and tenants packing out of the community is really disturbing. Over 17 persons are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals across the state due to injuries sustained on the road”, he added.
“A community that host Man O’War Training Camp, Ministry of Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, World Oceanographic and Marine Research, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, and many others, yet we have no access of road”, he complained.
