Group Condemns PHALGA 3 Bye-Election Violence
A group, the Concerned Diobu Youth (TCDY) has condemned the violence act that characterised the suspended Port Harcourt State Constituency III by-election, last Saturday.
The leader of the group, Jinjiri Bala Mato, who spoke to journalists last Monday warned the perpetrators to desist from disrupting elections in Diobu.
Mato insisted that Diobu youth would resist any further attempts if such actions continue in any other election, adding that Diobu has never witnessed such violence in past elections.
He said this warning became imperative because of their disappointment over last Saturday’s by-election in Port Harcourt Constituency 3, which was disrupted by violence.
According to him,”We have been in Diobu for over 30 years. Diobu has been a peaceful place to live. Elections have been peaceful as usual between parties. We were shocked to see thugs very well known to us from Bayelsa, Delta, Marine Base, SARS operatives, fully armed and shooting sporadically to chase voters away and hijacked ballot boxes.
“Diobu residents, as we speak, are living in fear and tension. The strange faces brought into the scene frightened voters.
“So, we are sending a strong warning to individuals or groups of persons who perpetrated such violence to desist forthwith as such cannot be tolerated anymore”, he noted.
The coordinator of the group, Igonikon Gogo-Abite, who also spoke to newsmen, condemned the attack, and alleged that the state All Progressives Congress factional Chairman, Ojukaye Flag-Amachree was behind the attack.
According to him, “What happened in Diobu is condemnable. It is a show of shame by those who say they are on ground. The state chairman of APC grew up in Diobu and knows how peaceful we live, why should he bring people from Kula, Delta, Bayelsa, Marine Base to come and disrupt what was going on smoothly?”.
