Gunmen Invade Police Station, Kill Three In Kogi
Suspected gunmen numbering about five, yesterday morning, stormed Gegu Beki Police Station in Kogi Local Government, firing and killing two police men.
The officers killed are identified simply as Jacob and Akile, who were on duty.
Also killed in the incident was a detained suspect who was arrested for failing to produce a suspect he bailed.
It was gathered that the bandits numbering five, heavily armed with AK-47 rifles, invaded the police station at about 2.15am, yesterday on motorbike.
According to the source, immediately they arrived the station, they opened fire, moved straight into the station, and killed the two policemen on duty, while also shooting at the particular suspect in detention.
It was further gathered that the armed bandits made away with the slain police guns and ransacked the station’s armoury for more guns and ammunition.
The source added that lack of electric power aided the bandits whose operation lasted for 30 minutes; as they operated unchallenged.
As the time this report was filed, the corpses of those killed have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The Kogi State Police Public Relations officer, Mr. William Ayah, who confirmed the attack, said the command has commenced investigation on the attack.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has spoken up on how he sustained injury on his left foot and had his leg bandaged by doctors.
He said the incident happened while he was alighting from a vehicle.
The governor made this known, yesterday, through a statement by his Media and Publicity Director-General, Kingsley Fanwo, while dispelling speculations that he was “either hospitalised or otherwise incapacitated.
“The governor missed his footing, last Friday, March 30, 2018, while alighting from a vehicle and injured his left foot.
“He was treated by his doctors, who bandaged the leg and discharged him.
“We thank all the governor’s supporters and well-wishers who reached us to inquire after his wellbeing. His Excellency is doing very well and will be at work as usual after the Easter holidays.
“Once again, the governor sends his best wishes to Kogites for the Easter season and beyond,” the statement read.
