ICRC Tasks Nigerian Red Cross On Emergency Response
The International Com
mittee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has challenged its Nigerian branch to be more responsive to the needs of the people.
The president of the ICRC, Mr Peter Maurer, who said this, during a visit to the Rivers State branch of the society in Port Harcourt, said that Nigeria has received and will continue to receive support from the committee to enable it tackle the problems of emergencies in the country.
Maurer also promised that the ICRC would continue to respond to some of the challenges facing the South-South region, adding that, the committee will mobilise the business community to see how some of the challenges facing the region can be handled.
Also speaking, Dr Uche Dike said that the National Society was focusing more on the branches now than it has ever done in the history of the Nigerian Red Cross, promising that more will be done to enhance the growth of Red Cross in the country.
In his speech, the Rivers State branch Chairman of the society, Mr Blessing Otoru Ikemenima, thanked the ICRC president and his team for visiting the state, and called for the support of the ICRC to the state branch in view of the peculiar nature of Rivers State.
The ICRC president was at companied to the state by leaders from both the south-south and south-East.
