Group Demands Passage Of Anti-Torture Bill
A Niger Delta-based Non-
Governmental Organisation, Human Rights, Social Development And Environmental Foundation (HURSDEF), has called for the Speedy Passage of the Anti-Torture Bill before the National Assembly.
The Executive Director of the Foundation, Mr Justin Ijeomah who stated this during “The stop Torture Enlightenment Campaign” organised by the group at Abuja Estate in Port Harcourt said that the bill was aimed at making torture a criminal offence.
Mr. Ijeomah described torture as barbaric and in human, stressing that such treatment could not be justified.
The executive director noted that the group envisioned a world in which no one would be subjected to torture, cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment as promised by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“HURSDEF mission is to advocate consistently, promote human rights, the rights and privileges of the Nigerian Child and to ensure the enthronement of a green, clean and healthy environment for the uplift and development of the society”, he said.
He said that the campaign was geared towards creating public awareness on the need to put a stop to torture.
Also speaking the Rivers State Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, DSP Omoni Nnamdi advised youths in the state to shun anti-social vices as the leaders of tomorrow.
DSP Nnamdi who was represented by Inspector Elizabeth Ojeutu said that “torture is found everywhere as it does not only occur when one is arrested”.
In their separate speeches, some residents of Abuja Estate who attended the campaign decried incessant arrest, torture and detention of residents of the area by the Police and men of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps and called for the intervention of the group and Amnesty International.
