Fuel Scarcity Looms As Groups Give 14-Day Ultimatum
Nigerians may be facing another round of fuel scarcity across the nation if the threat issued by the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) becomes real.
PTD, in conjunction with the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Thursday resolved to embark on a nationwide strike over the condition of roads across the country.
The groups gave a 14-day ultimatum to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to commence full scale rehabilitation of major roads across the country, or face immediate strike action by their members.
The National President of PTD, Comrade Salmon Oladiti, National President of NARTO, Dr. Kassim Ibrahim Bataiya and the National president of NURTW, Dr. Najim Yasin, made their position known in a Press Conference addressed Thursday at NARTO Secretariat in Abuja.
They listed the Eleme-Oyigbo Road, in Rivers State, and the Mokwa-Jebba-Bode-Sa’adu Road as the roads that the Federal Government must commence immediate rehabilitation work on, without which the strike will commence immediately at the expiration of the ultimatum.
The NARTO boss, Bataiya, who spoke on behalf of the unions, said the need for prompt rehabilitation of the roads became imperative in view of frequent loss of lives and property.
Lamenting that the poor state of the roads has resulted in accidents and daily breakdown of vehicles, he said, “NARTO, PTD and NURTW have therefore, resolved that if by 14 days beginning from the date of this press briefing, government neglects or refuses to commence rehabilitation of Mokwa-Jebba-Bode-Sa’adu road, and Eleme-Oyigbo Road in particular, we would be left with no option than to withdraw our services”.
Bataiya regretted that the situation of the roads is affecting timely delivery of passengers, goods and services to designated areas and recommended that the rehabilitation should be approached through Public Private Partnership (PPP), road concession, toll levies among others due to the capital intensive nature of road infrastructure development.
Involvement of PTD would stop distribution of Petroleum products across the nation and this signal coming close to the Christmas period would frustrate socio-economic life.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
