The Independent National Electoral Commission said it has distributed 38,774,391 Permanent Voter Cards to Nigerians as of Wednesday, January 7, 2015.
This information was contained in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the chairman of the commission, Mr. Kayode Idowu, in Abuja yesterday.
The figure represents 71.35% of the 54,341,610 number of PVCs received by the commission across the country.
It also showed that 15,567,219 PVCs are yet to be collected by their owners.
Earlier, President Goodluck Jonathan had given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a marching order to issue all registered Nigerians their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) before elections on February 14.
Jonathan, who gave the order when he swore in the new Commissioner representing Oyo at INEC, Prof. Akinola Salau, at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, expressed concerns over complaints by many Nigerians, including some state governors, that they were yet to get their PVCs.
He said that if governors were yet to get their voter cards, it meant that so many Nigerians, were truly yet to get theirs.
He said; “luckily, the chairman of INEC is here. All registered Nigerians must get voters cards before the commencement of the general elections.
“We cannot conduct an election where some people will not have the rights to vote. People must decide who rules them at all levels. It is not just about presidential elections. In the state assembly, House of Representatives, Senate and Presidential elections, all registered Nigerians must vote,” he said.
The president, however, noted that complaints from Nigerians about voter cards underscored their growing confidence in the electoral process.
He stressed that this was not the case before the 2011 general elections where no Nigerian complained about voter cards.
According to him, the eagerness of Nigerians to obtain their cards and vote in February shows that they are confident their votes will count this time.
He said his administration deserved commendation for sanitising the electoral process to deepen the nation’s democracy.
Describing Salau as a man of impeccable character, Jonathan said he was joining the commission at a critical time that his service was most needed.
The president urged him to bring his credibility to bear in his new assignment.
“Professor, we charge you to go and demonstrate clearly that you are somebody with an impeccable character and that you will do good to all Nigerians irrespective of anything.
