Ex-militants Get Nov. Stipend ‘Morrow
The Presidential Amnesty
Office on Friday assured the former militants that they would be paid their November stipends by December 23 as they protested over the non-payment their allowances. Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs and Chairman, Presidential Amnesty programme Mr Kingsley Kuku, gave this assurance in Abuja.
“I want to assure them that we are working tirelessly with the Federal Ministry of Finance and Budget Office to pay their November stipends latest on Tuesday.
“I urge them to leave the streets, they must not demonstrate because it is unlawful,’’ Kuku said.
He advised them to learn to save for the future as their stipends for December might not come until January 2015.
Hundreds of ex-militant leaders and their foot soldiers on Thursday took to the streets of Yenagoa, Bayelsa state in protest against non-payment of their two months allowances. They barricaded the entrance to the Federal Government-owned Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board in Opolo, Yenagoa, alleging the failure of the board to address some of their earlier demands. The protest of Thursday came on the heels of a similar protest on Wednesday when they closed the Patani end of the East-West Road.
